EU Issues Draft Toy Safety Regulation
Fri, Mar 14, 2025 09:22 EDT
SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 039.25, reporting on proposed amendments to the EU's Toy Safety Regulation (TSR). The draft amendments were published in Communication C/2025/1032 by the EU in February 2025. Adopted by the European Parliament at its first reading, the TSR will repeal Directive 2009/48/EC (Toy Safety Directive, TSD). Substantial amendments to the TSD have been proposed, including replacing the EU declaration of conformity (DoC) with the digital product passport (DPP) and a requirement for manufacturers of digitally connected toys to consider risks to children's mental health and cognitive development. Also included in the amendments are an expansion of the general ban on toys containing substances classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 on the classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures, known as the CLP Regulation. If approved, the TSR will come into effect 30 months after the date of entry into force (EIF), with a transitional period lasting 30 months, subject to a few exceptions. Toys that comply with the repealed TSD may remain on the market for 50 months after the adoption of the EIF under the TRS. SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 039.25 includes useful details on the changes under the new TSR, as well as on restricted substances under its scope. Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 039.25 for more information. Son of a murder victim who turned his life around celebrates 20 years as an inspirational speaker
Fri, Mar 14, 2025 09:03 EDT
An inspirational speaker who lost his mother to a serial killer, his sister to suicide and his liberty to a spell in prison is celebrating 20 years as a coach; helping others to succeed with winning storytelling. Richard McCann, whose mother was the first victim of infamous killer Peter Sutcliffe, runs the iCan Academy which helps individuals, businesses and other organisations deliver effective presentations and pitches. Over the last two decades, Richard has delivered almost 3500 keynote speeches across the world, coached 7000 presenters and assisted numerous businesses - ranging from SMEs to global corporations - with their goals. To mark this milestone , Richard is running a special two-day residential iCan Influence Masterclass on May 14 and 15. It is aimed at professionals, trainers and leaders who want to add depth and storytelling to their presentation skills. Richard knows the fear that presenting to an audience can create. He cites research that found some people would rather die than face that fear. He was one of those people once and claims that conquering his fear turned his life around. Richard also makes the claim, backed by clients, that authentic storytelling is a compelling way to engage, win business and boost turnover. At a time when AI is in the headlines, Richard argues that while it is a useful aid, it cannot replace the human element that comes from a real, genuine encounter. "AI clearly has a place in business but cannot take YOUR place. Lived experience and the uniquely human ability to connect with others are what give presentations life and add authenticity to your pitch". Richard can certainly connect through his own experience of a life turned upside down by brutal murders and the consequent public attention. He believes this allowed him to connect deeply with people's emotions; understand their vulnerability and find their strengths. "I am grateful for the second chance I had after a troubled childhood and the early mistakes I made, and I'm indebted to the people who helped me take responsibility for my life, especially the inspirational speaker who led me to this career. I am proud to help others employ that introspection and use their authentic selves to improve their prospects." Richard's iCan Academy has an impressive list of clients including Dyson, Barclays, the NHS and Specsavers. Oliver North, Founder and MD of North Fire, says that turnover in his business increased by 242% after working with Richard. "Much of the business secured was won by myself influenced by the extra confidence I gained and Richard's ability to bring out the best in my performance as a presenter," he said. He was just five years old. She was the first victim of the notorious serial killer, Peter Sutcliffe. Having lost his mother to one of Britain's most notorious serial killers, Richard was raised in poverty by his often drunk and violent father on a tough council estate in Leeds, England, and was on the at-risk register before he could even walk and talk. What followed was foster parents and time in a care home, and he left school with no qualifications, stumbling from one mistake to the other until he eventually found himself with no prospects after a spell in prison. The same prison as his mother's killer! When he was released, he had few prospects and entered a suicide pact with one of his sisters. He had reached his rock bottom. By learning to accept full responsibility for his life, embracing his authentic self and adopting an iCan attitude, he went from no-hoper to Sunday Times Bestselling Author and internationally renowned award-winning motivational speaker. His first book, 'Just a Boy', sold almost half a million copies in the UK alone and has been translated into more than 10 different languages. Other books followed along with a speaking career that has seen him deliver almost 3500 keynotes across the globe since he became a professional speaker in February 2005. About the iCan Academy Founded in 2005, the iCan Academy based in Leeds, West Yorkshire delivers Richard McCann's range of services from keynote presentations to workshops by inspiring audiences on overcoming adversity and demonstrating the power of an 'iCan' approach. As an inspection body, SGS plays a key role in the new system, conducting assessments and issuing certification via the PortNet platform. This initiative has required system integration, process digitization, tracking and traceability and close collaboration with customs and port authorities. The new online system advances Morocco's modernization of foreign trade procedures, giving both exporters/importers and inspection bodies like SGS an innovative and secure way to facilitate trade and improve the competitiveness of Moroccan companies in international markets. Indonesia updates technical inspection and verification program
Thu, Mar 13, 2025 08:00 EDT
SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, examines the latest updates to Indonesia's technical and verification program in an article that also includes advice and insight for new exporters and explains the main reasons for the increase in trade regulations. As the largest economy in Southeast Asia, with annual imports of USD 263 billion, Indonesia's many commodity markets are increasingly protected by regulation. In 2024, downstream plastics were included in the list of products subject to inspection prior to shipment to the country. The Ministry of Trade (MOT) has implemented an import licensing program covering different kinds of finished plastic products, with a technical inspection and verification program as the primary tool to ensure compliance. Importers of textiles, textile products, bags and footwear are also now required to produce trademark certificates when applying for one of three categories of import permit: General import permits for consumption (API-U), required for parties conducting import activities for trading Import permits for producers (API-P) Import permits for suppliers of raw or auxiliary materials (PPBB) Hazardous chemicals importers have also been highlighted, with two categories designated: manufacturers and importers (API-P) and general importers (API-U). API-P importers are now required to obtain a recommendation letter from the Ministry of Industry to ensure their goods can enter the country legally. As pioneer partners of KSO Sucofindo - Surveyor Indonesia, SGS participates in 17 of the country's largest commodity programs, helping to ensure fairer trade practices and consumer/environmental protection. ADHD Girls: Groundbreaking Lived Experience Research Sets Out to Transform Mental Health Training
Thu, Mar 13, 2025 06:42 EDT
What are the symptoms of ADHD and autism in adults? And in adult women specifically? Any woman who's ever found herself trying to research either condition will have faced the same problem: not only are most symptoms described in scientific literature specific to children, but they are the sort of symptoms which most commonly show in boys - with girls left entirely out of the picture. This is a gender gap that a new event by the award-winning social impact company, ADHD Girls will explore in London early next month. ADHD Girls' research indicates that ADHD and autism in women is being routinely misdiagnosed as mood (e.g., depression, or anxiety) or personality disorders, due to outdated diagnostic frameworks that fail to recognise how neurodivergence presents in women. Since the pandemic, there has been an exponential rise in adult women receiving ADHD and autism diagnoses, with those aged 23-49 now forming the largest demographic seeking ADHD assessments. Despite research indicating that ADHD and autism co-occur in up to 70-80% of cases, many women are still dismissed in diagnostic processes that separate the two conditions. Additionally, existing treatments fail to account for the complexities of female neurobiology. According to the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA), over 800,000 ADHD medications were prescribed in early 2024/25, yet little research exists on how these treatments interact with fluctuating hormone levels in autistic ADHD women. In response to this systemic failure, ADHD Girls is launching a landmark event that will collect lived experience data to shape future training for mental health professionals. Autism & ADHD in Women: Missed, Dismissed, Reclaiming Your Voice will take place on 02 April at The Exchange, Twickenham. It will serve as both a moment of reckoning and a step toward tangible change. Through interactive discussions, research-driven insights, and collective storytelling, this event will empower women to reclaim their neurodivergent identities while contributing to vital research that will inform ADHD Girls' Train the Helpers programme: 'AuDHD in Women: DSM-5 Criteria through a Scientific and Intersectional Lens' . Dr Samantha Hiew, founder of ADHD Girls, said, "For too long, women with ADHD and autism have been unseen and unheard, trapped in a system that does not recognise their lived realities. The research, diagnostic criteria, and workplace accommodations remain built around a male-centric model, leaving an entire generation of women misdiagnosed, misunderstood, and unsupported. This event is not just another awareness talk - it is a course correction. It is about demanding the recognition, research, and support that we should have had all along." The findings from this event will directly inform mental health training, ensuring that future practitioners approach ADHD and autism in women with greater accuracy, sensitivity, and intersectional understanding.
